Introduction

Learning the alphabet is the most difficult part of beginning to learn Hebrew.

The Hebrew Alphabet has 22 letters, five of which have different final forms that are used when the end a word.

Unlike the Latin Alphabet used in English, the Hebrew Alphabet is read left to right.

Originally the Hebrew Alphabet had no vowels, but used the weak consonants Aleph (א), He (ה), Vav (ו), or Yud (י) to represent vowels.

Today, the niqqud system of dots is used. However, vowels are still largely omitted except in children's books, educational materials, prayers, poetry, foreign words, and to clarify ambiguous pronunciations.
